Our journey begins with a visit to the stunning Añashuayco Quarries, located in the Cerro Colorado district. Here, 500 stonemasons, including elders up to 80 years old and younger generations who inherit this family tradition, work daily with their mallets and chisels, supported by ropes to extract the precious sillar. This white stone gives Arequipa its nickname, the White City.
The quarries, now transformed into a fascinating tourist circuit, offer a unique opportunity to witness the living culture of these master stonemasons while enjoying the natural landscape. At the Cortadores Ravine, you’ll be amazed by the recreation of the front of the La Compañía de Jesús Church, while learning about the process of extracting and cutting sillar, or white volcanic stone, explained step by step by a local master mason.
Next, we’ll head to the breathtaking Culebrillas Canyon, a hidden gem full of natural beauty. You’ll walk through narrow volcanic rock walls carved by erosion, creating a winding landscape that will leave you in awe. The contrast between the white sillar and the rugged surroundings makes this a truly unforgettable experience.
