FAQ's

How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain trek?

The walk to the summit takes about 1.5 hours over continuous but gentle uphill terrain, with no climbing or technical sections. The real challenge is the altitude, not the path. Your guide sets a slow, steady pace so the group can stop and catch its breath as often as needed, and emergency oxygen travels with us for the whole trek.

How high is Rainbow Mountain?

The summit of Vinicunca sits at 5,036 m (16,522 ft), roughly 1,600 m higher than Cusco itself. It is the highest point most travellers reach anywhere in Peru, which is why acclimatising beforehand matters more here than raw fitness.

Do I need to acclimatise in Cusco before this tour?

Yes. We recommend at least two full days in Cusco (3,400 m) before attempting Vinicunca, ideally after some gentler day tours around the city or the Sacred Valley. Going straight from sea level to above 5,000 m in a couple of days is the most common reason travellers struggle on this trek. Drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol the night before, and take the climb slowly.

What should I wear for the Rainbow Mountain hike?

Dress in layers. It is very cold at pickup time, and the same morning can bring strong sun, wind or rain. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves for the early start, plus serious sun protection, as UV levels at this altitude are extreme. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are essential; the trail can be muddy or dusty depending on the season.

What time does the tour start and finish?

Hotel pickup in Cusco is between 04:30 and 05:00 depending on where you are staying, and we are usually back in the city around 17:00. Breakfast and a buffet lunch in Cusipata are included, and we can arrange vegetarian meals or other special diets if you let us know when you book.

Is there a minimum age for this tour?

We recommend it from age 8 upwards. The walk itself is not technical, but altitude affects younger children more unpredictably than adults, and the day is long: pickup before 05:00 and back in Cusco around 17:00. Children who join should already have spent a couple of days in Cusco. If you are travelling with younger kids and still want a high-altitude day, Humantay Lake is the gentler alternative.
