Sea lion colony and tour boat at the Palomino Islands, Lima

The best day trips from Lima depend on one thing more than any other: how many hours you are willing to spend in a van. Pachacamac and the Palomino Islands fit in a morning. Paracas and Huacachina take a very long day. Caral and Nazca are where most “day trip” lists stop being honest.

I live in Lima and plan these trips for travelers every week. Below are the six options people ask me about, with real drive times, prices and the ones I would skip.

Quick answer

  • Half day, no long drive: the Pachacamac ruins (31 km south, back by lunch, from USD 59) or swimming with sea lions at the Palomino Islands (9:00 to 13:30, from USD 135).
  • One full day: the Ballestas Islands in Paracas plus the Huacachina oasis. It works, but it is about 18 hours door to door (from USD 119).
  • Two days: the same route with a night in the desert is the better trip (from USD 170 per person, based on 2 travelers).
  • For ruins fans: Caral, the oldest city in the Americas, is 3.5 to 4 hours each way.
  • Not a day trip: Nazca, about 7 hours each way by road.
Day trip Time from Lima Best for
Pachacamac About 1 h each way A half day of history
Palomino Islands 4.5 h tour with pickup Wildlife and a swim
Paracas + Huacachina 3.5 h to Paracas, 18 h day Sea and desert in one go
Caral 3.5 to 4 h each way Archaeology fans
Lunahuaná About 3 h each way Rafting and a slow lunch
Nazca 6 to 7 h each way Skip as a day trip

What is the best day trip from Lima?

The best day trip from Lima for most first-time visitors is Paracas and Huacachina if you have a full day to spare, and Pachacamac if you only have a morning. Paracas gives you sea lions and penguins at the Ballestas Islands, and Huacachina gives you dunes and sandboarding, two things you cannot see anywhere near Lima.

My honest pick changes with the traveler. If you are arriving from a long flight or flying out the next morning, I would not put you on an 18-hour day. A half-day trip and an evening in Barranco is a better use of the time. If wildlife is your thing, the Palomino Islands give you a closer encounter with sea lions than the Ballestas do, and you are back at your hotel for lunch.

Pachacamac: the easiest half-day trip from Lima

Pachacamac is a pre-Inca religious complex about 31 km south of central Lima, on the old Panamericana Sur in Lurín, and it is the easiest day trip from the city: around an hour each way and back by lunch. Pilgrims came here for more than a thousand years to consult its oracle, long before the Incas added their own Temple of the Sun on top.

What you see: adobe pyramids, the Painted Temple, the Acllawasi (the house of the chosen women) and a view over the Pacific from the Temple of the Sun. The site museum is small and well done. Entry costs S/ 15 for adults, according to the Ministerio de Cultura.

The site is closed on Mondays, which catches people out. Our Pachacamac half-day tour runs Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 12:30, with hotel pickup, an English or Spanish-speaking guide and the entrance ticket included, from USD 59 per person.

Our tip: pair it with something in the afternoon. Pachacamac in the morning and a food tour or a walk in Barranco later makes a full Lima day without long drives.

Palomino Islands: swimming with sea lions near Lima

The Palomino Islands tour is a 4.5-hour outing, hotel pickup included, with a boat ride from the port of Callao to a large colony of South American sea lions, where you can get in the water with them in a life jacket. No other trip on this list puts you this close to wildlife.

The boat passes San Lorenzo, the largest island off Peru, and El Frontón, a former island prison, before reaching the colony. Swimming is optional: if you would rather stay dry, you watch from the boat. The water off Lima is cold for most of the year, so the summer months, December to April, are the most comfortable for getting in.

Our Palomino Islands tour runs daily at 9:00 except national holidays, with pickup in Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco, and you are back around 13:30. It costs from USD 135 per person, for 2 people or more. Book at least 2 days ahead so we can confirm your spot on the boat.

Paracas and Huacachina: can you do them in one day from Lima?

Yes, you can do Paracas and Huacachina in one day from Lima, but it is about 18 hours door to door and roughly 8 of them are on the road. Paracas is around 250 km south of Lima, about 3.5 hours by road, and Huacachina is another hour beyond.

The day goes like this on our Ballestas and Huacachina full day from Lima: pickup in Miraflores between 4:30 and 5:00, a 2-hour speedboat tour of the Ballestas Islands (sea lions, Humboldt penguins, the Candelabra geoglyph), a wine and pisco tasting in Ica, a dune buggy ride and sandboarding in Huacachina, and back in Lima around 22:30. It costs from USD 119 per person, and the Ballestas fees, buggy and tasting are included. Only lunch is extra.

Why I usually suggest two days instead

With one extra day, the same route stops being a marathon. You sleep in Huacachina, watch the sunset from the dunes, and do the Ballestas the next morning, about an hour away in Paracas, when the sea is usually calmer. It is the trip people tell me they enjoyed more, not just saw more.

Our Paracas and Huacachina in 2 days plan does exactly that, with a sunset picnic in the dunes, from USD 170 per person based on 2 travelers. For more options in the region, see our Ica and Paracas travel guide.

Caral: the oldest city in the Americas

Caral is a 5,000-year-old city in the Supe valley, north of Lima, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. It is a serious day trip: 3.5 to 4 hours each way, with the last stretch on a rough side road from km 184 of the Panamericana Norte.

The site is open every day from 9:00 to 16:00, and visits are only allowed with a local site guide. Adult entry is S/ 11 for Peruvians and foreigners, and the site asks visitors to arrive before 14:30 (Zona Arqueológica Caral). Leave Lima by 7:00 at the latest.

Is it worth it? For people who care about archaeology, yes: you are walking through pyramids built when the Egyptians were building theirs. For everyone else, it is a lot of road for an hour and a half of ruins. Caral is not one of our regular tours.

Lunahuaná: rafting and wine in the Cañete valley

Lunahuaná is a green river valley about 185 km south of Lima, close to 3 hours by car, and it is where people from Lima go for rafting on the Cañete river, a zipline and a long lunch with local wine and pisco. You can raft there all year; the rapids get stronger in the rainy months, roughly January to April.

It is a better weekend trip than a day trip, and the experience is more Peruvian getaway than tourist highlight. It is not something we offer, but if you have a car and a free Saturday, it is a fun day out.

Nazca: why it is not a real day trip from Lima

Nazca is about 7 hours from Lima by bus each way (6 or more by car), so a day trip by road means 12 to 14 hours in a vehicle for a flight of about 30 minutes over the lines. Many tours sold as “Nazca in one day” fly from the airport in Pisco instead, which saves road time but costs more and depends on the weather.

If the Nazca Lines are a priority, plan at least one night in Ica or Nazca. If they are not, the Ballestas Islands and Huacachina are a better use of a day south of Lima.

Which day trips work with one day in Lima or a layover?

With one day in Lima or a long layover, only Pachacamac and the Palomino Islands work, because both are half-day trips with hotel pickup. Everything else on this list takes the full day or more.

If you only have one day, I would rather see you spend it in the city: our Lima in 1 day plan covers the historic center, Miraflores and a proper meal. If you are between flights, our Lima layover guide shows what fits in 6, 8 or 12 hours.

Mistakes we see with day trips from Lima

  • Going to Pachacamac on a Monday. The site is closed.
  • Doing Paracas and Huacachina the day you land or the day before an early flight. An 18-hour day with a 4:30 pickup needs a full night of sleep on both sides.
  • Expecting warm water at the Palomino Islands in winter. From June to October the sea is cold. The trip is still worth it, but it is a short swim.
  • Leaving Lima late for Caral. The site asks you to arrive before 14:30, and Lima traffic going north can add an hour.
  • Not leaving a buffer for the Ballestas. The boats do not go out when the port authority closes the port for rough seas. Have a backup day if this is the trip you care most about.

Should you book a tour or go on your own?

You can visit Pachacamac on your own by taxi or app car, and you can reach Paracas by direct bus, but a tour is the easier option for the Palomino Islands, Paracas plus Huacachina in one day, and Caral. The Palomino trip needs a licensed boat, the Paracas and Huacachina day only works with a fixed schedule, and Caral is hard to reach without a car.

Going on your own makes the most sense for Paracas if you plan to sleep there. For a single day, the time you save with hotel pickup is the whole point.

FAQ

What is the best day trip from Lima?

For a full day, the Ballestas Islands in Paracas plus the Huacachina oasis, from USD 119 with transport and fees included. For a half day, the Pachacamac ruins (from USD 59) or swimming with sea lions at the Palomino Islands (from USD 135).

Can you do Paracas and Huacachina in one day from Lima?

Yes. Pickup is around 4:30 in Miraflores and you are back around 22:30, so it is about 18 hours with roughly 8 on the road. With one more day, the 2-day version with a night in Huacachina is more relaxed.

How far is Pachacamac from Lima?

About 31 km south of central Lima, in Lurín, roughly 1 hour each way depending on traffic. A half-day tour runs from 9:00 to 12:30. The site is closed on Mondays.

Is Caral worth a day trip from Lima?

If you love archaeology, yes: it is a 5,000-year-old city and a UNESCO site. Plan on 3.5 to 4 hours each way and arrive before 14:30: visits are guided and the site is open from 9:00 to 16:00.

Can you visit the Nazca Lines in a day from Lima?

Not well by road: Nazca is about 7 hours each way by bus. Many one-day tours fly from Pisco instead, which is shorter but more expensive and weather dependent. A night in Ica or Nazca is the better plan.

How far in advance should I book a day trip from Lima?

At least 2 days ahead for the Palomino Islands, and a few days ahead for the Paracas and Huacachina full day, especially from December to March and on Peruvian holidays.
